The Institute for the Economy and the FutureThe Institute for the Economy and the Future (IEF) is a department of Western Carolina University (WCU) that provides research, polling, and data analysis on economic issues for the region. The IEF is an interdisciplinary department consisting of faculty, students, and staff that uses the resources of the university to provide aid to local business leaders and government officials. Some of the IEF’s partners include the Department of Commerce, AdvantageWest, and Regional Council. One aspect of the IEF is the Research Rapid Survey and Polling Center which is used to perform surveys to collect data that can then be used in research. The research that is produced by the IEF is then used by business and government leaders to help in their decision making. The IEF uses cutting edge computer technology for conducting surveys in order to make the data as reliable as possible. Along with telephone interviews, the IEF also makes use of e-mail, web-based, and group surveys in order to collect data. The data collected by the IEF is used in a variety of different research studies.The IEF performs research studies on topics dealing with politics, economics, and social issues that affect western North Carolina. The IEF also produces podcasts that are available for the public on the IEF website. http://ief.wcu.edu/ Center for Digital EntrepreneurshipThe Center for Digital Entrepreneurship (CDE) is a part of the IEF that helps both WCU students and faculty to work with local business leaders on projects that help disseminate information with the use of digital technology. The CDE helps students gain experience outside of the classroom by participating in real world projects that incorporate interdisciplinary work and encourage collaboration with people in other fields. The CDE uses state-of-the-art computer technology and High-Definition video equipment for projects that include website material, podcasts, and films.
