North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center

The North Carolina Rural Development Center is a non-profit organization that works to improve quality of life for people living in rural areas throughout North Carolina by financing businesses, offering job placement, and building affordable housing. The center was founded in 1987 due to increasing poverty and economic problems in rural North Carolina. The organization is governed by a board of directors that consists primarily of business leaders throughout the state and government officials. It receives funding from both government and corporate sources. The organization is officially based in Raleigh.

One of the major goals of the Rural Development Center has been to help provide job training and job placement to those who have been laid-off due to out-sourcing of jobs. Manufacturing jobs were previously one of the largest employers of rural workers, but many of those jobs have been lost due to corporations moving overseas. Many of the jobs now available require education and skills that displaced workers lack. The center has been involved in providing job training and job placement to workers whose jobs have been out-sourced. The organization also helps provide loans to entrepreneurs looking to start businesses in rural areas that will provide jobs and economic growth.

The center has also been working on programs to help revitalize rural communities. They provide to grants and loans to impoverished areas to help build new housing and to bring in new businesses. Grants and loans are typically awarded to communities that have innovative ideas that will lead to job creation or meet a critical need for low-income citizens. Technical advisors are also provided to help communities best use their funds to make improvements to rural communities.
