Macon County has seen an increase of 60.97% in social security beneficiaries while the county’s population has grown only 41.9% during that same time period. This speaks to the aging baby-boomers who have decided to retire in Macon County. An astounding 29.85% of Macon County residents receive social security benefits while the average North Carolina county only contains 17.48% of such beneficiaries. Due to Macon County’s second home communities, 30.39% of the county’s housing unit inventory is designated as seasonal. This compares to the state average of 3.83%. There are also fewer owner-occupied housing units in Macon County (50.28%) relative to the state (61.65%).
